Awesome weekend
Feb. 21st, 2006 11:11 amWow, I was so busy all weekend I didn't get a chance to keep track of how awesome it was, but I want to do it now so that I don't forget.
Friday
OK, this day wasn't so great. In fact, it was awful. The plumbing had been acting weird for a couple days leading up to this, but by Friday morning the tub was all backed up with icky dirty water with FOOD particles in it from the garbage disposal and dishwasher. Ewww. Fortunately, I had my work computer at home, so I could still somewhat keep up w/ my email & stuff via VPN. UNFORTUNATELY, things in the office were going haywire and I really needed to be there. I also needed access to a decent phone, but all I had at home was my cell phone which was not getting very good reception, and the RotoRooter man was making all kinds of noise as he cleaned out the pipes in the house. And the IP phone is down until Jon gets it hooked up using some different routers or something, so that wasn't even an option for better reception at least. I don't know when that's going to be up again. It's his deal.
By about 2:00 I was just fed up with sitting home and NOT being able to fix things at work simply via email and phone, so I just went into the office (unshowered, mind you) to get things under control. I stayed late, but I got things in order and felt a lot better just having gone in. I think otherwise I would have been sick with how guilty I felt that I wasn't in. Especially since the other admin in the building was out on vacation, so I was supposed to be doing double-duty filling in for her, too.
The awesomeness started that night. We went to play poker with a few of my co-workers, which was really fun and relaxing. Good times, good conversation, good laughs. And Jon even won! He hasn't won with that group since the first time I brought him to play in a $50 tournament, so that was nice for him.
Saturday
On Saturday I was up by 7am. It was a beautiful morning (I love that the sun is starting to rise earlier now!) I cleaned out the dishwasher, did some picking up, made some tea, and eventually got started on my taxes. I would have had them done already, but my W2 from when I was employed by Cushman & Wakefield hadn't arrived in the mail so I had to call them and get a pdf version sent via email last week. I was taking my time, and didn't get very far on them, but that's ok (I ended up finishing them on Sunday). Jon was up by 10am, and then we could get started on the CLEANING! Woo!
We picked up and organized all the files that had been accumulating on the kitchen table when they should have been going into the file cabinet. We swept and mopped and dusted and vacuumed. We FINALLY found a way to arrange the furniture that REALLY WORKS!! And we LIKE it, too!! We brought out the green lamp that had been in the spare room and it is PERFECT behind the loveseat. We got the TV-computer hooked up and working right. We got the laser printer onto a cute little cart in the living room and networked so that we can actually use it upstairs and not have to run to the basement! Everything just totally started falling into place like I've never seen in that house before. It was so great how productive we were! I don't know why we couldn't get things straightened out like that before, but they just weren't working when we tried before. At noon or so we took a break for some tuna melts. Then we started cleaning and moving and organizing stuff again.
The reason for all this flurry of activity to get things in order was because we hosted a poker tournament that night for some guys from VolkSport (the club that Jon belongs to for VW enthusiasts.) We wanted to make sure we had enough room for several people to move around easily, plenty of seating room, all that good stuff. It's so funny - the way we had the living room arranged up until Saturday was sooooo cramped - but suddenly we found this super arrangement that we are actually going to continue using now! And it worked great with all the company.
One of the guys showed up early because he lives pretty far away and was already in the neighborhood, so that kind of cut short my bathroom cleaning. I got the counters and mirror and toilet cleaned, but I really wanted to do a hardcore cleaning of the tub after all that backup crud had been sitting in it on Friday. Heh - here it is Tuesday now and I still haven't gotten around to that! I better work it into my plans for tonight. I really want to get it sparkling. Right now it's still got some dingy spots from the yucky water that was standing in it - blech.
Sunday
I got up by 8am on Sunday and made some coffee right away. Mmmm, coffee. I usually brew it about once a week, usually on Sunday. And I've started making it half-caf every time, but it's still so nice. I don't know why, but our paper didn't get delivered that morning!! Grrrr.... That's become the nice Sunday morning "thing" - I drink my coffee while we watch a little TV, and we read the paper and shuffle through the ads looking for some fun sales or stuff to do. So that didn't happen. But we did decide to go out to Stillwater to look at an open house, so we got showered and dressed and did that. Lunch at McDonalds, fun day cruising around down there. We drove by another house that Jon had seen online, but didn't walk through. We did talk to the teenage neighbor kid, who was super awestruck by Jon's car. Heehee...
Then we swung by Jon's office - I think he had to manually reboot a server or something. When we were there, I had a grand old time playing with his desktop magnet toy thingy. Enough that he suggested we go down to the Mall of America to play with other ones. But then on the way, we got to talking and ended up deciding to go to IKEA instead. That's always a fun time... although I've noticed it gets less fun the more I go. I think I've gotten too familiar with most of their stuff. But the GOOD news is that we finally found a coat rack like we've been looking for! You know, the coat-tree kind... We've been looking all over the place but were never able to find them at any of the regular stores we hit. So we got it and set it up at home and it's just right! ^_^
Monday
I had Monday off due to the President's Day holiday. Jon didn't, poor guy. In fact, he tried to take it easy that morning since he had to be at a client site at 10am, so there was no reason for him to go all the way to his office at 8, only to have to leave shortly after that to go the opposite direction to his client site. He tried to have a nice slow morning, but his phone started ringing at 8:00 sharp, and then he got about 3 more calls within the next hour. It was really crazy. I thought President's Day was supposed to be a day off for everyone! Oh well.
I spent most of the day going through all my junk piles in the spare room and in my closet, getting my files straightened out and shredding old docs that I had meant to shred long ago but never did for some reason. I got a lot done, but not a lot that was visible, so I decided to do something that really made it LOOK like I'd been productive.
I moved the piano. All by myself. Yep. (Ow, my back. Ow, my blisters.)
We had talked about bringing the piano back into the living room now that the furniture is finally arranged, but never got around to it on the weekend. I know it's on wheels, and it's not that far from the guest room to the living room, so I decided to give it a go. It was HARD, especially moving it over the carpet in the guest room. Then it got kind of stuck in the door, so that wasn't cool. The wheels didn't want to go over that little metal whats-it-called thingy where the carpet meets the hardwood... I actually don't remember how I finally got it over that, but I think it finally went after I had to crawl UNDER the piano to get behind it and PUSH. In case anyone's wondering, it's a spinet (Wurlitzer, by the way - a gift from Jon's mom who never got around to learning to play) - I think if it had been an upright I wouldn't have even bothered trying to move it on my own.
So yeah, I got the piano moved into place in the living room, got the lamp next to it where I wanted, and it looked great. It's perfect. I'm very happy about this! But my back really does hurt today... Either way, it was worth it. I played for a good while after I got it in place, and that was nice.
I think the plan now is to move the guest bed into the back corner room. I just have this suspicion that even though it's a slightly smaller room, it will work better that way, so we can use the middle room for an office-type area or something. And storage, of course. Oh, those shelves... Ugh. If 3/4ths of the basement wasn't WORKSHOP, we could store stuff down there, but that's just not an option with the way Jon operates. Oh well. He's gotta do his stuff. I won't begrudge him that.
