We now have an appointment to meet Kodiak on Saturday afternoon. I'm very curious to see what he's like, how he acts, and what kind of things his foster family can tell us about his personality. I'm not really dead-set on adopting this dog right now, as I don't really even know him, and I'm willing to wait in order to find the right match for us.

Part of the screening application asked what our annual dog budget would be. I took an estimate and threw $1500/yr out there, but I kind of wonder if it might be more than that. Premium dog foods can cost a lot, especially when you're feeding a large dog. I really do kind of gravitate more towards small and medium-sized breeds, but Jon prefers medium- to large- dogs... and I'm pretty willing to compromise on size, considering the size of our new house and land.

My toy poodle, Muffin, used to sleep on the foot of my parents' bed, just below my mom's feet (there was enough room since my mom is only 5'0"). A big dog can't sleep on the bed with two people the heights of me and Jon - hell, a big CAT can't do it without upsetting someone! (I woke up paralyzed again last night from Moby sleeping between and across my shins - he is a HEAVY BOY! We just weighed him again recently, and he's still holding steady at about 18 pounds.)

On a totally unrelated note, I found TWO fuzzy-wuzzy Wooly Bear caterpillars yesterday when I was raking the lawn - in two different places! They were black on the ends, and orange in the middle, and they curled up in little round puffballs when they got scared. I think they were Isabella Tiger Moth larvae, and must have just started coming out of hibernation as things have been warming up these last few weeks. I put them both down by a big oak tree, but by the time I had run inside to get my camera, one had already scurried away or hidden in the grass, so I just took pictures of the other one. Unfortunately, I can't upload any pictures right now, since my laptop is being repaired (I tripped over the power cord), and I have to install special software to upload pictures from my camera. And I don't want to do that on the laptop Jon is letting me use - it technically belongs to his work so I don't like installing too much stuff on it directly. Ditto for my work computer here. But rest assured, I'll upload caterpillar pictures one of these days when I'm able. I just don't know WHEN that will be.

The need for a dog in my life is getting way too strong since we started spending so much time at the new place. There's just so much OPEN SPACE that needs to be run through and pooped on! ;)

Actually, it's a very nice, dog-friendly neighborhood. Dee has an elderly Golden Retriever who sits out in the yard most of the day, just kind of smiling at the world and occassionally trotting around and greeting neighbors who come by to visit. One of the girls from the opposite side of the development introduced us to a spunky little Bichon-looking dog after he walked right over and into our garage to see what Jon was up to! :D We really like the way the 7 houses and their surrounding yards and land are all pretty much one big communal area that everyone cares for and enjoys together. It's very relaxed and friendly, dogs included!

All that being said now, we found this listing today, and although this dog is a NON-FEMALE and a NON-POODLE (*gasp*), he does sound like he pretty much has the qualities, training, and personality we have been keeping our eyes open for (not to mention, he's very pretty - awww!) Plus, we are big advocates of pet adoption. We requested an application to get started on the screening process and see if this dog might be a good match for us and our lifestyle. If not, no problem. We'd rather have the "right dog" than just adopt one just because we really really want one.

I HATE SHEDDING ANIMALS IN THE SPRINGTIME. Even little Indy, my practically shed-free kitty, is shedding like MAD! Cat hair everywhere and I can't seem to catch up! It's in my nose and mouth constantly, on my clothes, in the keyboard of the computer, on the furniture, ACK!!!

Let me remind the reader that I have NEVER lived with a shedding animal before, and I am rather disgusted by the whole process. POODLES ARE THE BEST.

I got my dog Muffin when I was 4 years old. She came to live with us in November, 1981 when she was just 8 weeks old. She was a beautiful black and white phantom toy poodle. If you think poodles are horrible yappy dogs, you have not owned a poodle, so SHUT UP. Seriously, shut up. I don't want to hear any negative garbage about a breed that is nothing less than totally ideal for me. If you have bad things to say about poodles or their hair or anything about them, please take it somewhere else. They only have that curly hair to remind you that they are the EINSTEINS of the dog world. (OK, 2nd only to Border Collies, but still remarkably intelligent, perceptive, trainable, personable, and wonderful.) More about Muffin, dogs, work, and babies )
