Corporate America
Dec. 29th, 2004 06:13 pmThis irritates me. I try to do the right thing at all times, I try to be a nice person and be kind to everyone I meet, and somehow even THAT is wrong.
I was told today that "Corporate America" is very much like High School. There is drama, gossip, deception, bickering, and all of it is pointless and worthless. People are power-hungry, they want others to fail, they DON'T always do the right thing because they think cheating will make things easier, get them farther, but then they are stuck with the burden of always covering up for it, and trying to keep track of who is "on their side" and who might be a "mole" out to get them! Come ON, people! We are supposed to be grownups here! Cheating the system is NOT nice. Being a tattletale is NOT a nice thing. Trying to sabotage the success of others to further your own endeavors is NOT a nice thing. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. BAH!
What upsets me most about this is that I'm starting to see that oftentimes, being nice and doing the right thing is not even considered to be the adult thing to do anymore. Was it ever??? How fucking depressing. I don't want to feel like I'm some kind of innocent fool for just following the rules!
The reason for this entry is that today at work I was discreetly reminded not to talk to one certain person (who I see on a pretty regular basis) AT ALL about another certain person, because (allegedly) the first person wants the second one to fail at a particular project, and might "twist" anything I say about the second person to make that happen! Good grief! This is stupid because a) All I ever talk to the first person about is the weather, family and neutral things like that; b) IF this person really wants the other to fail, that is just plain WRONG; c) If this person does NOT want the other to fail, then what I was told was basically GOSSIP. I don't like being exposed to this kind of drama and intrigue. I really want to resist it, but it seems like even being a good person is wrong. Why do I say this? Well.....
Several weeks ago, my computer at work was upgraded to a new OS, and I noticed that a program I needed was missing afterwards, SO... I contacted the correct people that I should contact to get software I need, and suddenly there was this big blowup because apparently that program was not supposed to be on my computer in the first place, and my predecessor who had installed it there should not have done so (something about her not having a license for it)! So then my boss and his boss got yelled at for giving it to her in the first place, and I never got my software. So that means they were in the wrong, right? But wait.... Then my boss told me that the guys who were mad at him were wrong, and that he was allowed to install copies of that program on as many computers as he wanted, as long as only one person at a time was using the actual program! Well, that sounds weird too, but IF it is true, then why can't he just talk to the other guys about it and get it all cleared up? Because we do things "OUR way" apparently and don't have to deal with them anyway. So he installs a (pirate?) copy of the software on my computer and tells me not to let them find out it is there! So now I am trapped in someone else's DECEPTION DRAMA!!!! I HATE this kind of shit. I hate hate hate it. I just always want to be HONEST and NICE and FOLLOW THE RULES so this kind of insanity NEVER has to be dealt with!!!
People need to learn that being GOOD is ALWAYS better than being bad. No exceptions. Of course, it only works if EVERYONE does it, and how fucking likely is that? Hah. I feel like I am being tainted by Corporate America. Not that I am innocent, but I do feel like if I stay in this for too long, I will be corrupted further than I am comfortable with. I hope I never see this kind of crap as acceptable or preferable to the way I personally try to operate in my life.
