May. 11th, 2005 06:01 pmLast week my boss informed me that another admin who has worked there for several years had just put in a 30-day notice. She has been my "mentor" since I started my admin position there, and she is a really nice gal, so I'll be sad to see her go. I've only been there for like 6 months, too, so I'm a little scared about losing her as a support system when I'm still not sure how to handle a weird situation. But she has decided to spend more time at home with her little ones, so that is wonderful, and I'm really happy for her.
Yesterday my boss offered me the position of the gal that is leaving. I told him at first that I was not sure yet if I wanted it. I really enjoy a lot of the projects I get to work on with the engineers, and I would hate to have to quit doing that. However, he and I talked about it more yesterday and today, and decided that I could bring my current responsibilities with me to the new position, since I should be able to balance her current duties with the ones I already do. And since I will not have to double at the switchboard anymore, that will free up a LOT of time for me, so that I am not constantly being interrupted by phone calls (usually wrong numbers - grr), and I won't have to be "tied" to my desk all the time, so if I need to run up to a lab to check some info, I don't have to worry about finding someone to cover the front desk for me! Plus, I will have more freedom to wander around and visit with people on my down time, instead of sitting there at the front desk zoning out and wishing the phone would ring! So yeah, I have ultimately decided to accept the position. Can I get a holla! w00t.
On a related note, I finally met the agent who got me this job in person for the first time today! My agent was Sean, but he passed my resume on to Scott, who I corresponded with via phone and email for a couple weeks while he was working to get me into this position. He did a lot for me, that's for sure! But I never actually met him in person. Well, he is leaving his agency, and he brought his replacement in today to meet with my boss, who he will be dealing with in the future, probably incliding finding my replacement at the front desk. I got to finally shake Scott's hand and thank him in person for all the help he had been to me. When I told him that I had indeed decided to accept the new position, and he advised that I should inquire about a pay increase.
I've never asked for a raise before, but this is a good point to consider. (Heck, for all I know I am already slated to get one.) But if I am not, I really should. I am still going to be doing all the work I do now, PLUS all of the soon-to-be former admin's work, but just not running the switchboard. Since my duties will basically be increasing, it seems only fair that my pay increases accordingly. I'm pretty sure that they have this already set up, but I'm going to schedule a meeting and make sure we are all on the same page about my compensation. Not that I need it - but it seems only fair. I've already grown the position I'm in to something MUCH larger than it was when I started last fall... but that is what I was expected to do when I was hired, so I guess that's ok. I'm just glad that they like the work I'm doing, and that somehow I've garnered a reputation as an Excel whiz. Like, HUH? I actually scored higher in MS Word at the employment agency, but I guess people like what Excel can DO more, so they are more impressed by its basic functions.
Haha - my mentor, the gal who is leaving, asked me to help her set up a specific set of message rules in her Outlook last week. I was so proud. I had thought everyone knew how to do that, but maybe not if they don't need to use it much (I do it all the time)... But it made me feel good to be able to help her with something, after all the help she has given me since I started.
