I want to knit this poncho/snood thing (.pdf file - opens in new window), and I am probably going to use one of these yarns to do it.

Any opinions on what color I should pick? They are all so pretty.... ^_^

OOOOOOOOOO So purty!

Ice Blue, sage, blueberry, peacock, chanel, iris & Indigo are my favorites! I'm NO help! (But at least it's cheaper than Jaggerspun!)

I concur with OneWomanShow - too many pretty colors for one to make a decision! What is with the girl's face though? Freaky...

I was, up until I became a werewolf ;)

Just kidding. I'm actually an archaeologist by trade. If you ever want a job that gives you a sexy body and horrible calloused hands, but impresses EVERYONE you meet, go into archaeology! If you want a job that pays well, stay away from it!

I would like to be able to escape my office and go back to the field, but I need a stable job right now... maybe after the wedding I'll return, when I can rely on Jon's money!

Nah, nothing like that. I mostly did upper midwest (US) stuff - historic and prehistoric. Most of what we actually find is not like you'd think from movies... If the artifacts were anything "good", the people would have kept them! The stuff you usually find is the garbage and debris, like stone flakes from where someone spent some time sharpening a tool, or fire-cracked rocks from where an old hearth used to be, or maybe an arrowhead that broke so they just left the pieces there on the ground. It's not actually that common to work on a burial site, since those are pretty well legally protected by the Native Americans. And if you find one by accident, it has to be reported right away and then there are a lot of other legal issues that you have to go through to decide whether it would be worthwhile to tear it all up.

My friend actually was working a unit (those square holes in the ground that we dig are called units) at one site that turned out to be in the middle of the garbage dump behind where a colonial house once was! He was probably 8-10 meters down in the ground, and all the walls of the unit were lined with old barrel hoops and milk bottles and broken doll arms and legs and faces.

how do you even know that this bit of stone flake is even something you want to collect?
it must be like needles in haystacks.

archaeologists find stuff out via garbage?!
OMG! our consumerism is going to be so embarrassing a couple of hundred years from now.
the archaeologists will be saying we were disgusting wasteful pigs.

You'd be surprised what a person can see in gopher backdirt piles... that's often the best place to look if you're trying to figure out where you should be digging.

It's not always like a needle in a haystack... usually more like gravel in a dry screen! LOL - but seriously - flakes from lithic tool creation are easy to recognize when you know what to look for. They will have several distinct characteristics. This is a good image which shows how we can recognize a "flake" versus just a plain old piece of stone. Sometimes the bulb of percussion is very small, sometimes there might not be an erailleur scar, but they are still pretty noticeable if you keep a sharp eye while you're screening soil.

As far as being embarassed, DON'T be! I think the amount of trivial crap that we throw away will say more about us than we realize, and it will be more truthful than purposefully written histories. Those are always biased... they represent us the way we WANT to be remembered, but the artifacts always tell the plain old truth. In that, it will be very valuable. I don't think the future arch's will judge us much by the amount... They will be glad they have so much to study!

i think archaeology would send me crazy-frustrated.

but do we really want to be remembered as we live?
they'll be fascinated, sure, but ultimately once the historians get hold of whatever the archaeologists find we'll be branded a selfish & stupid era. :o(

A good point.... I guess I just take faith in the fact that there is always room for debate on interpretations of material history! ;)

But ultimately, you're probably right. I kind of hate the way Western Society in general has turned out. :( Then again, there's a lot I like about it... so I'm kind of torn :(

Dammit, now you've got me all depressed! :P
