My heroes

I've never been much interested in sports. In school, my big sport was spelling bees. I'm not embarassed, because I have some pretty big trophies, and you have to be smart to be a good speller.

The other sport I love, but don't always participate in, is Competitive Eating. In the last few years, I have become a rather avid fan of the sport, especially of Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas. This lady makes me feel justified in my own gluttony! My friends like to laugh at how a person of my small stature can eat so much - we joke that I have one hollow leg where all the food actually goes, since my stomach couldn't possibly hold the amounts that I eat.

The Black Widow just won another eating competition this weekend. In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, she smoked the competition by eating 35 bratwursts in 10 minutes. The previous record was just 19.5 brats in the same amount of time. She is a 99-pound tiny little GODDESS! Here's the Washington Post story on that feat.

It takes real skill to eat like that. And Sonya Thomas and my abosolute all-time eating hero, Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi (who was the reason I first really got interested in the sport back in 2001) both also show that the the skinny little people are the BEST eaters! So maybe I should start training in earnest...

One of my favorite memories from the 2001 Nathan's Famous Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest (I was watching it on TV) was when Kobayashi started eating more hot dogs than they had signs for! There were women holding up cars that represented how many hot dogs each competitor had eaten, and up until that year, the record was something like 25 or so. Well, he just kept eating well past 25, and 30, and 40 and more! And I remember they had to scramble to get a marker and paper and start WRITING DOWN the number he was on! No one was prepared for such skills! I was captivated! I had heard of "Japanesing" (eating the hot dog and bun seperately - pioneered by Kazutoyo "The Rabbit" Arai at least a couple years before) and was amused by it, but I didn't really get INTERESTED until Kobayashi hit the scene.

These contests go on all year, all around the world. It's pretty interesting. Here's the official site for the International Federation of Competitive Eating, if you're interested to learn more about it.
