I found my dog! And no, it's not Kodiak! We went to meet Kodi at the C.A.R.E.S. shelter in Wyoming (it's a town in Minnesota :P) and he was a bit larger than we had expected, and not very playful. We were told he didn't like any toys or games at all. :( We also met Grady, who was horribly mouthy and seemed to have a touch of doggie ADHD, plus he was shedding like CRAZY. Seriously, no way man. Not even just twice a year. Oh well. I'd be happier with no dog at all, than with the wrong dog for our family.

Then we stopped by the Northwoods Humane Society that is closer to our house in Forest Lake. Mostly big lab-crosses (as usual) - not really our style. Ugh. BUT!!! Then we saw a dog with the label "Paddington" (just something they called him so they can keep track of the dogs. Not a permanent name by any means.) He is definitely half spaniel, and the other half looks like it could be Corgi or Chow or maybe a little of each... or maybe something else! He was found as a stray with another Chow-mix a couple weeks earlier and no one ever claimed them. Neither of them had tags, collars, or microchips. :( Plus they both had MANY wood ticks, and "Paddington" had some matting of his pretty black spaniel-esqe coat. :( "Paddington" was a VERY funny-looking little guy - about half a dog high and a dog and a half long! LOL! He is all black, with a little white dot on his chest, and I believe he had a smaller white dot on his chin. And a permanent doggie smile on his face! He was a very happy, good-natured boy.

What we liked about him was that he knew how to "Sit" and "Come", and he is a good walker on the leash - stays right by your side with no pulling. He's also a good submissive dog - he would get interested in going to look at the door or something that caught his attention, but the moment you call him back, he'd obey. He laid down with no resistance when we pushed him over - no power struggles or anything. And he is very good-mannered. You could tell that we was excited to come out of his kennel to meet new people by the little hops he made with his front paws, but he resisted the urge to jump up on us. He also seemed very gentle, patient, and tolerant. We played with his ears, feet, tail, and mouth, and he never flinched once. We also picked several fat ticks out of his deep coat - EWWWW.

After two visits and examinations of the goofy-looking stubby-legged little black dog, we decided that he was great fit what we were looking for. He had the right personality, the right manners and attitude, and he was not so BIG like most of the other dogs up for adoption! I believe his paperwork put him at about 36 pounds. A nice, medium-sized boy with a happy smile. Oh, and I never heard him bark once! He was one of the more calm dogs when we walked into the kennel. You could tell he was interested and excited, but not insanely chewing the gate and screaming his head off like some of the other dogs. Blech. They think he is about 4 years old. A nice, adult dog who will still have a lot of years to spend with us.

Jon made me do all the paperwork for adopting the dog - I guess that means the dog is technically going to be more MINE than ours (but probably not). He has to be neutered before we can take him home with us - I think that is supposed to happen sometime this week. And I plan on making an immediate appointment at the groomer to get him washed and shaved down. The shelter did give him a flea and tick treatment, but those ticks are taking their sweet time falling off. Plus his lovely thick coat is just such a matted, sloppy mess, and I think he will be happier with a nice trim for the coming warm weather. The hair on his legs and feet is so long, it looks like he is wearing giant furry boots! I'll have to try to remember to take a picture before he goes to the groomers so I can do "before and after" comparisons.

All ticks and matted hair aside, though, this dog has the sweetest smile you've ever seen!

I think I want to name him Rocco, or Solo (because he is SO LOW to the ground), or maybe Wookiee - he really looks like one! Well, a midget Wookiee anyway. ;) But we will have to get to know him better to be sure we pick a suitable name for him. I'm really looking forward to it.

Congratulations! He sounds like a great dog.

Please don't name him "Wookie." Or Luke, or Obi Wan, or Jar-Jar. Gah!

OK, OK, he's not a Wookiee... but "Solo" is still OK, right? Jon really likes it because 1) he's So LOW to the ground, and 2) we can tell people he was named after the plastic cups.

As long as there is never a "Han" attached, Solo should be okay. Thanks for respecting my wishes in the naming process. (laughing)

This afternoon somebody left a big blue barrel on wheels near my desk. On the side is printed "Solo Papel de Oficina." Thanks to you, my first thought was, "Oh look, a barrel of puppies!"

Haw haw haw! :P

If you really want to see a barrel of office-puppies, watch for the barrel marked "Barril de Perritos de Oficina" - LOL!
