I Live in a LAN Party
Oct. 28th, 2005 11:21 amOK. OK. ok ok ok ok ok. The website is ALMOST up, I swear. This is not my fault! It's all dependant on Jon doing the Port Forwarding Thang, seriously!!! And that just hasn't happened yet! But he said something about it last night when I was cooking supper, so I didn't really hear everything he said, but the fact that he brought it up is a good sign. Trust me on this. And now I am going to rant about the LAN Party that I live in.
Our house is actually more connected than your typical LAN party right now. And it's getting worse. Er, better? Well, more and more wired anyway. I suspect it's going to develop a primitive consciousness pretty soon.
We have a business-level network at home. Everything except Exchange, I swear. (And actually, we kind of do have that because we are tapped into his workplace.) It's ridiculous.
The TV is connected to the server is connected to the laptop is connected to the desktop is connected to the airport is connected to the stereo is connected to my BRAIN. And so on. Oh yeah, the IP Phone is in there somewhere too - yep, I talk on the phone via the internet now. And we are directly connected to Jon's Work network, too - I don't know how to explain this, but it is basically like we are physically AT the office without being there. You name it, it's part of the friggin matrix that is my home. Seriously. Jon is trying to get the thermostat on it so we can adjust the temperature while we're not there. I am not joking about this. He thinks it would be nice to turn up the heat before you get there if you decide to go home earlier than usual. The automated system isn't enough. We need global access and control, too.
I think we are losing my dear little buddy, TiVo, though. :( Apparently Jon wants to replace him with some part of The Matrix. I like TiVo. He gives me nice suggestions. I don't just want to record programs that I ask for, I want a little buddy recommending other shows I might like. Bah.
It's all been "Coming together" for weeks now, but it's a complicated system. Hell, Jon does this for a living, so don't think it's your typical home network. It's not. It's really not.
