[livejournal.com profile] frino inspired me to play around with the look of my LJ some more, so here is the new incarnation! Please pay close attention to the fact that I have now incorporated Esperanto as a supported language, and as the language of my Comment links and stuff. ^_^ As some of you may remember, I learned Esperanto a few years ago over the summer. It is VERY easy, and pretty fun, and makes learning other languages easier, too! For more information about Esperanto, here are a few helpful links:

Once upon a time, Jon had 4 vehicles: a Zebra Car, a Ford Expedition, a Geo Metro, and a Volkswagen GTI. Jon loaned the Zebra Car to a friend who needed a vehicle. That friend made payments on the Zebra Car until he bought it. Then Jon was left with only 3 vehicles!

The Expedition was a big, gas-hungry truck that didn't get used much - maybe once or twice a month, Jon or one of his friends would need to use it to haul something big. The payments were expensive, and the insurance was expensive. The truck was not worth as much to Jon as he was paying for it every month. He decided to sell it to a family that would be able to make more use of it on their farm.

The Geo Metro barely ever got used either. Jon was planning on turning it into a beautiful art car, like a dragon or a fish with cut-up CD's for iridescent scales. Until then, though, he just let it sit in the grass. Often, another friend who had a car that broke down a lot would borrow the Metro, so at least it was useful to someone. One day, that friend finally decided to give up the battle with his own car and just buy the Metro from Jon. So now, all Jon had was the VW GTI!

The GTI was a good car. It was silver and zippy and strong - Jon added a hitch to the back so he could pull a trailer with it... It was almost as good as having the truck back! But then, the DAY AFTER he sold the Metro to his friend, Jon lost Reverse in the GTI!!! What irony!

So now, Jon is driving a rental vehicle while the GTI is in the shop, and he has gone from having 4 cars to none. Easy come, easy go...

Does it get any better than a nice spicy pickled egg?? I don't think so! Wish I had one.... :(

I've been having insane food cravings lately to rival any old pregnant lady - liverwurst and pickle sandwiches, ice cream, ham and cream cheese wrapped around pickles and sliced, pickled eggs, cheeeeeeeeese, all kinds of mad things I can't remember now, but believe me, there have been some weird ones. Luckily, most of them are pretty short-lived.

Hehe - I kept a close log of what was happening on Friday night when I was feeling SO sick... This laptop is so fun - I just popped open a notepad doc and jotted down things as they occurred to me. Looking at it now, it's mostly a temperature log. Dig it:
came home from work @ 3:30 due to sheer exhaustion - last dose of 2 ibuprofen was at noon

5:00 felt very cold - goosebumps. Temperature = 100.0

5:15 called parents

5:30 temp = 99.5

6:00 temp = 101.3 - called Jon - took 3 ibuprofen

I will need Jon to bring Tylenol for me to take with the ibuprofen to control the fever, and Aleve (which lasts 12 hours) to get through the night

6:20 temp = 101.3 but now I feel hot, not cold anymore

6:37 temp = 101.5

6:48 temp = 100.8

7:26 temp = 99.5

8:30 temp = 99.5

9:00 temp = 98.6

9:25 took 2 ibuprofen - temp is still 98.6 - I think the fever has broken. Still feel like hell.

Funny. Today is the 4 year anniversary of that night I really did almost die from that hellish fever that Darren and Dr. Hushka and all my awesome nurses saved me from. I really really will write more about it when I get the time. As for now, I should have been in bed an hour ago.

This afternoon at work, I was curled up in a chair reading a magazine and sipping cappuccino on my break, when a tiny little bird went THUNK into the window near where I was sitting. I got up and walked to the window (which goes from floor to ceiling), and I could see the dazed little bird on the ground where he had fallen, and next to him was a little birdie poop.

I guess he got the shit scared out of him.

Last week my boss informed me that another admin who has worked there for several years had just put in a 30-day notice. She has been my "mentor" since I started my admin position there, and she is a really nice gal, so I'll be sad to see her go. I've only been there for like 6 months, too, so I'm a little scared about losing her as a support system when I'm still not sure how to handle a weird situation. But she has decided to spend more time at home with her little ones, so that is wonderful, and I'm really happy for her.

Sorry folks, just another second-hand update on The Chili Finger Blog. I think I won't bother promoting it here after this, but I just had to. I am rapidly becoming something close to obsessed with tweaking the code on that damn blog and I just tweaked it so that each Blog Member's post shows up in a color unique to that member.

Also, if you would like to be a contributor to The Chili Finger Blog, just let me know and I will add you, along with your very own posting color! (OK, so I'm bad at promoting.)

Also, it seems the theme of The Chili Finger Blog is gradually changing to something like "Things that people have eaten or found in their food that are really gross to eat or even find in food."

Check it out! Become a member! Share your opinions on stories you have found in the news, or just share your own stories! I'm willing to bet that a lot of people have at least one story that would fit in here there.

I just realized (with quite a start) that I could just take the html from my Audioblog site and paste it into here, so I went back and did that so you don't have to navigate away from LJ to hear my audio entries.

Let me just be the first one here to say DUH!

Last year, for Memorial Day weekend, Jon and I went to Wisconsin Dells to play at the Kalahari Resort and Indoor Water Park, and we also drove to the House on the Rock, which is WAY neater than I can describe. It was a really fun time. We also played miniature golf somewhere in there that weekend.

This year, we're not sure what to do, but we have talked about taking a weekend jaunt out to New York City. Who does THAT?? No one that I know of, but we just might try and pull it off. I think we could, but it might take an extra day, which would cost us, since we have both thrown all our Vacation days into Burning Man later this summer. I could cheat and use a sick day, but Jon's work recently switched over to a PTO system, which means vacation days and sick days are taken out of the same pool, so he would actually lose a paid vacation day that could have been used for Burning Man.

Anyway, I think it would be a fun adventure to take a whirlwind weekend trip out to The City, but I'm not sure if we are going to do it or not. If we do, I'll post more about it here in one month. (Because Memorial Day is May 30th.)

I made my white chili last night, and realized I still hadn't posted the recipe! Ack! So here it is:

1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in 1/2 inch cubes
1 medium onion, diced (I used onion powder last night, and that works fine too)
1 - 1.5 tsp garlic powder (I used diced garlic this time)
1 tbsp veg. oil

Saute all in large saucepan until chicken is almost all white. I used a 3-quart pan and it was fine. A dutch oven is also plenty big.

Stir in:
2 (15.5 oz) cans of Great Northern Beans (The original recipe says to drain these, but I recommend using the liquid because it helps thicken the broth)
1 (14.5 oz) can chicken broth (Again, feel free to be flexible here. I just use hot water and a couple tsp of powdered chicken bouillon)
2 (4 oz) cans of chopped green chilis
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
*I've never bothered measuring these spices. Just add them to taste.

Bring all to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in
1 can evaporated milk

Serve immediately. The recipe I have says this makes about 7 servings. I've never actually tested that, but it does go fast!

I guess I should have mentioned this when I started it, but I have created a blog dedicated to news stories about people in food. I have called it Chili Finger. You can visit it at http://chilifinger.blogspot.com.

If you would like to have posting access (so you can create new posts, not just comments) on the Chili Finger Blog, please contact me and I will add you as a member.

That is all. Thank you.

**Edit 5/4/05: I have changed the name to The Chili Finger Blog, but the URL is the same.**

This is kinda cool... and also rather freaky. Scientists are finding ways to use MRI scanners to read subjects' minds (kind of).

Full story here. (Opens in new window)

Gas in my neighborhood just jumped from $2.08 to $2.23 overnight. Come ON! I'm really getting tired of this, and in true American form, I want someone to blame for things that I don't like. I have chosen to blame the people who drive SUV's on a daily basis with no real REASON to be doing so. Notice I am not blaming SUV owners, because I know there are legitimate reasons to own an SUV. Jon has a gigantic truck, but it only gets used once or twice a month. It is like a tool. For daily driving, he uses a car that gets great gas mileage, so that's good.

And as for people that can't afford to own 3 or 4 cars like Jon, I say why not SHARE an SUV! I mean, most of the driving Jon's Expedition sees is from friends who need to use it! I think if small groups of people shared SUVs instead of everyone having one and driving it every day, gas prices would either go down a bit, or at least be easier to deal with by driving more efficient vehicles.

Thank you.

I am reading the instructions for using Summer's Eve Feminine Deodorant Spray on www.drugstore.com (don't ask, cuz I'm really not sure why. Seriously. I got no problems with crotch smells.). Here is the part that has be confused:

For external use only.

Do not spray this product:

* On broken, irritated, or itching skin.
* Directly into your vagina, or into your eyes (emphasis mine).

WHA--WHA--WHAAATT??????

Every time I try to type "Dutch Braid" it comes out as "Dutch Brain."

I made an audio blog entry today, but I have more to say about it now. This morning, gas was $1.96. At noon (same station), it was $2.17. Right now, just after 5 pm, it is $2.09. WTF mate?!?!?
