This gal is on my Friends List, although I don't actually "know" her. Nevertheless, I don't think I could be more excited at this amazing story! I am so proud of Kiki, and so proud to just be a woman, knowing that things like this really do happen!

I have decided (although not unequivocally) to participate in NaNoWriMo next year. Maybe I should say, "I think that maybe I might like to consider participating in NaNoWriMo next year." Yeah, that's probably more accurate.

I just opened a Microsoft Word document and started freewriting to see how many words per page I could/would average. In about 15 minutes, I filled one page (single-space, Times New Roman, 12 pts, full justification) with 745 words. I did not add an extra carriage return between paragraphs - just a tab indent at the beginning of each one.

This means that if I kept a good pace, and I could write about 2.5 pages a day, I'd get nearly 56,000 words written in 30 days next November. Of course, I don't expect it would go that well. There would have to be an actual story involved, and those involve more time, effort, and thought. I'm sure I would have to expect to spend more than 35 minutes a day writing. Then again... that's why I'm thinking about it NOW! So I can start an outline, character sketches, all that other time-consuming stuff that I am allowed to do ahead of time. Then all I'd have to do in November would be to actually pull it all together and write like mad! And even if I can't accomplish exactly what these figures show, I still might win since all you need is 50,000 words!

Yeah, I gotta do this. Cool. And if not, there's always NaNoWriMo 2007.

Steve Johnson, the Chairman of the Richmond Public School Board in Richmond, Virginia, is currently under fire for posting a personal on a men-only personals website. His profile on this site was viewable only to paid members and in no way affected his performance as School Board Chairman. My friend's friend [livejournal.com profile] tupelo has started an online petition to keep him from being run out of office. Please feel free to show your support for fairness and justice by signing the petition here. Thanks!

Oh, and please feel free to repost with [livejournal.com profile] tupelo's permission!

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that LJ is going to rollout TrackBack support by the end of December. Maybe just for paid members at first, but when the November News Wrap Up ends with "Stay tuned to [livejournal.com profile] news. We've got more exciting announcements coming for you in December!" ...well... I can't help but hope a little!!

This morning, before I left for work, Jon showed me this amazing little video. (I believe he found it on Fark.) Anyway, I wanted to share it here because it's totally amazing. There is a second one that you can access by clicking above the video where it says, "Related: Christmas Lights Parts 2" but I like this first one better.

This story is from the Fargo Forum newspaper, but it happened in Bismarck, North Dakota. Enjoy.

BISMARCK – An 84-year-old man trying to maneuver into a parking spot caused nearly $17,000 in damage to four vehicles, a pallet of manure bags and a local shopping center, police say.

Lt. Dan Donlin said John Martin of Bismarck was in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle Thursday afternoon waiting for his wife to return from a store, when he saw a parking spot closer to the building open up.

“He decided to try to move the vehicle up into that parking spot. He decided to remain in the passenger seat when he did so,” Donlin said.

When Martin went to step on the brake, he hit the gas pedal, Donlin said.

Martin’s vehicle hit two other parked vehicles and then a hair salon in the shopping center. One of the vehicles that was hit struck a pallet of manure bags in front of the building. The second vehicle that was hit struck a third vehicle.

No one was hurt. Martin was cited for care required, which carries a $70 fine, Donlin said.

I get my auto insurance through Progressive, and they offer a really neat discount program called TripSense (Jon and I both participate in it.) Want details? )

Someone on my floor made popcorn yesterday and today. It smells all buttery and crap. I'm not pleased about this.

Some of you may remember that I worked for 3 years in a movie theater. Buttered popcorn is like GARBAGE that you SWIM through. You can't get the smell off of you. It is not "food" and it stops smelling very good after that amount of time.

Presents!

Deedle deedle deeeee! I'm so excited - I got Jon's birthday present AND something for Giftmas now, too - and I just know he will LOVE them. I'm not usually too big on gifts, but these are things I do know for sure that he has said he would enjoy, and he does not have them right now and wouldn't get them for himself.

Can't say what they are because sometimes he actually logs in here and reads my LJ - not often, but I'm not taking any chances and I don't want to ruin the surprise.

I don't think I could have asked for a more pleasant holiday. Both my brothers were able to be there, along with me and my parents of course, and my mom's sister's ENTIRE family was there (all 4 of them) which hasn't happened in several years due to one cousin being in the Marines and one being in the Air Force. And Grandma and Grandpa, of course. It was at their place!

So for this family, it was a relatively "small" group of just 11 people, but it was nice that the families that were there were "complete". We all really had a great time being together - we are a somewhat rambunctious group, but always fun. Read more... )

Wow - I have NO idea what this means! )

Ravens are my favorite birds. Well, them and crows. And jays and magpies. All the corvidae, really. The are so intelligent and playful and curious and fascinating. So I don't know what the point of this was, but I like that it said something about Ravens.

I can't believe I'm behind on an internet phenomenon that started in JUNE. I'm very embarassed.

Nevertheless, it's probably never too late to join the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com Hey, this "logic" is as good as any other, right?

Y'all are gonna be so proud of me. Well, ok, maybe not. But *I* am so proud of me.

I just took 5 pictures of my little boring office, and 2 pictures of my WIP - the Liesel Scarf that I'm knitting for my mom.

I will try try try to remember to upload and post them tonight. Looking at them on my camera, I just realized exacly how utterly awful my office actually looks. I think I will have to get some plants and posters for it this weekend.

Back in this entry I posted pix of a pretty moth I found at work.

Today I found out that it is a type of Hummingbird Moth called a White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hyles lineata). I also found some really neat pictures of them:
