OK, I know this belongs in my knitblog, but I'm putting it here too because I like it.

I can't find a SINGLE pair of scissors in this house. And I can't find my Swiss Army Knife either. I was JUST using the little Swiss Army Knife Scissors last night, and now I can't find it. It's on my big keyring, so obviously I can't find ANY of my keys. And Jon just left to go rearrange servers at the office.

I am trapped here with no keys, no scissors, and a gauge swatch (tube) for Soleil that I REALLY WANT TO BIND OFF AND WASH!

Gah.

I should go look in my knitting box again. I swear I thought I tossed at least one pair of my scissors in there when I was packing...

Six minutes later...
*Kicking self* OK, so they were on the bathroom counter. I don't know how they got there, or why I would have put them there, but at least I found my keys, Swiss Army Knife (and tiny scissors) included.

Happy day!

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog, if medicine prices here (web address) are bad.

My dog and I are still alive :)

From the very first time we saw Bonzo in the Humane Society shelter, up until today, we never once heard him bark. And believe me, when people walk into the dog room at the shelter, there is a LOT of barking from (almost) all the dogs. A veritable cacophony, if you will. But never Bonzo (who was then known on paper as "Paddington".) Read more... )

Well, I picked up the Dog Formerly Known as Paddington on Friday after work. He was wearing one of those terribly embarassing plastic cone collars and looked ridiculous. The ladies at the humane society helped me get it off of him, but then he started licking the stitches where he was neutered on Wednesday, which is a no-no, so the collar had to go back on! The poor little guy has such stubby short legs that the bottom of the cone kept hooking on the ground when he tried to look down, and it caused him no end of trouble when he tried to come up the stairs at our house! They told me that we can take the cone off by the end of the weekend, but we decided to take it off last night and see if we could just keep him distracted from the stitches, and he did OK. So Cold

I am SO FREAKING COLD right now. My fingers are slightly blue and very stiff. My fingernails are darker blue. I am wearing a sweater and I have a space-heater going full-power, but I still have goosebumps. I am shivering. Ugh.

"Yeah but the dang NINJAS don't know that!"

Vitamins

I had a routine doctor's visit this afternoon. I like my new doc. She was a LOT nicer than the last one I saw. She admired my engagement ring with that little light-up magnifying cone thing they usually use to peer up your nose and in your ears! LOL

She told me that if we are planning on having babies, even if not right away, that it would be a smart idea for me to start taking a pre-natal multi-vitamin. Huh. I guess I might as well. I'm not taking a multi right now, just a B-100 complex most days, but I guess it can't hurt.

No real point here. I guess I just thought it was a bit weird. I think I'm just going to go with a regular women's multi-vitamin, and then switch to a pre-natal one later on if/when we decide to start trying for a pregnancy.

I found my dog! And no, it's not Kodiak! We went to meet Kodi at the C.A.R.E.S. shelter in Wyoming (it's a town in Minnesota :P) and he was a bit larger than we had expected, and not very playful. We were told he didn't like any toys or games at all. :( We also met Grady, who was horribly mouthy and seemed to have a touch of doggie ADHD, plus he was shedding like CRAZY. Seriously, no way man. Not even just twice a year. Oh well. I'd be happier with no dog at all, than with the wrong dog for our family.

Then we stopped by the Northwoods Humane Society that is closer to our house in Forest Lake. Mostly big lab-crosses (as usual) - not really our style. Ugh. BUT!!! Then we saw a dog with the label "Paddington" (just something they called him so they can keep track of the dogs. Not a permanent name by any means.) He is definitely half spaniel, and the other half looks like it could be Corgi or Chow or maybe a little of each... or maybe something else! He was found as a stray with another Chow-mix a couple weeks earlier and no one ever claimed them. Neither of them had tags, collars, or microchips. :( Plus they both had MANY wood ticks, and "Paddington" had some matting of his pretty black spaniel-esqe coat. :( "Paddington" was a VERY funny-looking little guy - about half a dog high and a dog and a half long! LOL! He is all black, with a little white dot on his chest, and I believe he had a smaller white dot on his chin. And a permanent doggie smile on his face! He was a very happy, good-natured boy.

What we liked about him was that he knew how to "Sit" and "Come", and he is a good walker on the leash - stays right by your side with no pulling. He's also a good submissive dog - he would get interested in going to look at the door or something that caught his attention, but the moment you call him back, he'd obey. He laid down with no resistance when we pushed him over - no power struggles or anything. And he is very good-mannered. You could tell that we was excited to come out of his kennel to meet new people by the little hops he made with his front paws, but he resisted the urge to jump up on us. He also seemed very gentle, patient, and tolerant. We played with his ears, feet, tail, and mouth, and he never flinched once. We also picked several fat ticks out of his deep coat - EWWWW.

After two visits and examinations of the goofy-looking stubby-legged little black dog, we decided that he was great fit what we were looking for. He had the right personality, the right manners and attitude, and he was not so BIG like most of the other dogs up for adoption! I believe his paperwork put him at about 36 pounds. A nice, medium-sized boy with a happy smile. Oh, and I never heard him bark once! He was one of the more calm dogs when we walked into the kennel. You could tell he was interested and excited, but not insanely chewing the gate and screaming his head off like some of the other dogs. Blech. They think he is about 4 years old. A nice, adult dog who will still have a lot of years to spend with us.

Jon made me do all the paperwork for adopting the dog - I guess that means the dog is technically going to be more MINE than ours (but probably not). He has to be neutered before we can take him home with us - I think that is supposed to happen sometime this week. And I plan on making an immediate appointment at the groomer to get him washed and shaved down. The shelter did give him a flea and tick treatment, but those ticks are taking their sweet time falling off. Plus his lovely thick coat is just such a matted, sloppy mess, and I think he will be happier with a nice trim for the coming warm weather. The hair on his legs and feet is so long, it looks like he is wearing giant furry boots! I'll have to try to remember to take a picture before he goes to the groomers so I can do "before and after" comparisons.

All ticks and matted hair aside, though, this dog has the sweetest smile you've ever seen!

I think I want to name him Rocco, or Solo (because he is SO LOW to the ground), or maybe Wookiee - he really looks like one! Well, a midget Wookiee anyway. ;) But we will have to get to know him better to be sure we pick a suitable name for him. I'm really looking forward to it.

I just found this picture on A Good Yarn and I am just tickled with how much I love it! Whee! )

We now have an appointment to meet Kodiak on Saturday afternoon. I'm very curious to see what he's like, how he acts, and what kind of things his foster family can tell us about his personality. I'm not really dead-set on adopting this dog right now, as I don't really even know him, and I'm willing to wait in order to find the right match for us.

Part of the screening application asked what our annual dog budget would be. I took an estimate and threw $1500/yr out there, but I kind of wonder if it might be more than that. Premium dog foods can cost a lot, especially when you're feeding a large dog. I really do kind of gravitate more towards small and medium-sized breeds, but Jon prefers medium- to large- dogs... and I'm pretty willing to compromise on size, considering the size of our new house and land.

My toy poodle, Muffin, used to sleep on the foot of my parents' bed, just below my mom's feet (there was enough room since my mom is only 5'0"). A big dog can't sleep on the bed with two people the heights of me and Jon - hell, a big CAT can't do it without upsetting someone! (I woke up paralyzed again last night from Moby sleeping between and across my shins - he is a HEAVY BOY! We just weighed him again recently, and he's still holding steady at about 18 pounds.)

On a totally unrelated note, I found TWO fuzzy-wuzzy Wooly Bear caterpillars yesterday when I was raking the lawn - in two different places! They were black on the ends, and orange in the middle, and they curled up in little round puffballs when they got scared. I think they were Isabella Tiger Moth larvae, and must have just started coming out of hibernation as things have been warming up these last few weeks. I put them both down by a big oak tree, but by the time I had run inside to get my camera, one had already scurried away or hidden in the grass, so I just took pictures of the other one. Unfortunately, I can't upload any pictures right now, since my laptop is being repaired (I tripped over the power cord), and I have to install special software to upload pictures from my camera. And I don't want to do that on the laptop Jon is letting me use - it technically belongs to his work so I don't like installing too much stuff on it directly. Ditto for my work computer here. But rest assured, I'll upload caterpillar pictures one of these days when I'm able. I just don't know WHEN that will be.

Yesterday, when I was on my way to work, I was on a pretty open stretch of road without too much traffic, so everyone could have been going at the speed limit (70 mph) without any trouble. Except the guy I ended up behind. I don't like to change lanes if I'm already in the correct one (I was), and it took me a couple minutes to realize that they guy I was behind was going about 57 mph, and we were getting passed by EVERYONE. How annoying! Since the roads were still pretty clear, I decided to pass him and get back in my lane... and what do you think was printed on the side of his van? Just guess before you click here, I dare you... )

The need for a dog in my life is getting way too strong since we started spending so much time at the new place. There's just so much OPEN SPACE that needs to be run through and pooped on! ;)

Actually, it's a very nice, dog-friendly neighborhood. Dee has an elderly Golden Retriever who sits out in the yard most of the day, just kind of smiling at the world and occassionally trotting around and greeting neighbors who come by to visit. One of the girls from the opposite side of the development introduced us to a spunky little Bichon-looking dog after he walked right over and into our garage to see what Jon was up to! :D We really like the way the 7 houses and their surrounding yards and land are all pretty much one big communal area that everyone cares for and enjoys together. It's very relaxed and friendly, dogs included!

All that being said now, we found this listing today, and although this dog is a NON-FEMALE and a NON-POODLE (*gasp*), he does sound like he pretty much has the qualities, training, and personality we have been keeping our eyes open for (not to mention, he's very pretty - awww!) Plus, we are big advocates of pet adoption. We requested an application to get started on the screening process and see if this dog might be a good match for us and our lifestyle. If not, no problem. We'd rather have the "right dog" than just adopt one just because we really really want one.

OK, to recap: We closed on the new house on Friday morning. I headed to work, while Jon took the rest of the day off and moved 2 trailerloads of stuff out of the old house and into the new. After work, I helped move a third trailerload. Bear in mind - we have not "packed" much of anything into boxes yet! This was all big stuff like furniture! This activity continued throughout the weekend. We now have one big house with a lot of large furniture in the garage (and some that has been brought into the house), one smaller house that has a lot of non-packed things in it, and a lot of boxes that need to be filled and moved. Why am I posting at 7:00 in the morning? Because I've been up since just before 6:00 and I'm getting bored waiting for sleepyhead Jon to wake up! Maybe I should start packing books downstairs or something...

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot - HAPPY EARTH DAY!
amberica: (Default)
So that's one more thing DONE off the list. The closing was this morning at 9:00 and took just one hour. Impressively quick.

*WHEW*

Grabbed an Egg McMuffin on the way home and ate it while Jon started disassembling the air hockey table to load it into the trailer. I guess he took the rest of today off, so a lot of moving will already be done by the time I leave work at 5:00.

Nice.

So now there is the stress of moving, then Burning Man is coming up, then the wedding, and THEN, sometime after September, I might be able to relax. But I'm not counting on it.
