Why I'm glad to be moving soon
Aug. 23rd, 2005 09:10 amSo. Remember how just a short while back in my apartment building there were TWO fire alarms within 6 weeks? Both late at night, and both HIGHLY annoying? Well there were. Trust me. I don't want to mess around with linking to them, but they are there.
That did not happen last night. Nothing bad did. BUT. This morning, I got up and walked into the bathroom to take a shower as I do every day. I pulled back the shower curtain and EEK!!!! the tub was full of backup!! There was all this yucky murky water, about 1/3 tub full, and it had all kinds of black crud and crumbs of crap in it. Ewww. For a split second I thought it was a bath I had taken and forgotten to drain, but then I remembered that the last time I took a bath was on Sunday night, and I had taken a shower Monday morning, so that wasn't the case. And drainage was fine on Monday morning. So all this backup happened sometime between Monday and this morning.
I was not happy to see this. I was already running later than I wanted this morning. So I had to grab some shampoo and go wash my hair in the kitchen sink with the sprayer, and then I went and did a quick sponge-bath in the bathroom sink. Grrr. Got dressed and all that jazz. Tried unsuccessfully to use the plunger on the bathtub drain. Nothing. When I finally left for work, I swung by the rental office to mention the problem, but no one was there!! And it was after 8! So I came to work and tried calling the office again. No answer!!! I left a voicemail about the drainage issue, and told them to feel free to just go in there and look at it if they need to... Although I suspect it's probably a bigger issue than just my tub.
I guess I'll see what happens when I go home for lunch today...
But yeah, this is another reason why I guess I'm not TOO sad about leaving this building... although overall, it's been a really pleasant place to live, and I'll miss the pool, even though I never used it much.
Then again.... what if the new house has even MORE issues?? (>_<) D'oh.

Supply update
Aug. 20th, 2005 06:12 pmI have decided - just now - to NOT bring my bike to Burning Man after all. Last year, every time I rode bike somewhere on the playa, I just got annoyed at having to find a place to park it and then lock it up everywhere I went when I got off of it. Additionally, there were times when I really really wanted to hop on a mutant vehicle, and I couldn't because I had my bike with me.
I had more interesting experiences when I was on foot - it made it easier to just meander into little places that I would have to park/lock a bike at otherwise, which is really a hassle when you just want to be spontaneous.
I am still glad that I bought the head and tail lights for my bike, and the basket that I mounted on the front. I use them a lot anyway.

Knit cables
Aug. 20th, 2005 09:54 amWell, I said I'd post pictures, but I only took one. ( So click here to see picture. )
It's on a flexible needle there. That's my living room carpet under it. Jon and I have both been so busy with preparations for Burning Man and moving and all that, I never got a chance to show it to him until last night. He was VERY impressed and proud of me, and he said it looked "swank." ^_^
He also said the legwarmer I was working on last night looked swank too. I wonder when he started using that word so much...
I will post images of the legwarmers once I finish them. I am about 2 inches away (or maybe less?) from being done with the first one - but here's a "teaser" image to keep you interested (maybe):
( Legwarmer? )

Itchy. Antsy. Caffeinated..?
Aug. 19th, 2005 04:21 pmI feel so edgy right now it's not even funny. Can't sit still in my seat. This is kind of how I feel when I have a cup of regular coffee in the morning. Except I only had a cup of black tea today. I guess it would make sense - I haven't had much caffeine at all in quite a long time, and my sensitivity is pretty high to begin with. I think my tolerance might go up a little in the winter when I tend to drink more teas and coffees.
And it's just about 4:30 on a Friday afternoon, and I want to go hoooome! I suppose I could be doing some research on the train that some of the managers here want to see about chartering for a big party... but I can't even sit still - how could I actually focus and do any kind of effective research?!?
( boing boing boing boing boing... )

I am so proud. I decided to knit a practice swatch to learn cabling. And it looks AWESOME! \(^o^)/
There are some parts that are a little wobbly-looking, but it's my first time so that's to be expected. Will post pictures when I get home tonight.... But it looks kinda something like this:

Long fingernails. Long wait on yarn.
Aug. 17th, 2005 08:24 amMy fingernails are getting long. They look kind of nice. Typing is getting harder by the day. And yet, I'm afraid to cut them. I'm afraid that they will end up shorter than I wanted to go, and then I will be unhappy because I will have to be sooo careful and grow them out again. This is not an easy thing for me.
Actually, I don't really like long nails that much. It's just that when they happen, it's such a rare and amazing thing on the hands of a clumsy nail-breaking girl like me that I just have to appreciate it. I didn't try to grow these out. I just looked down in the Monday meeting this week as I was trying to type some notes and there they were!... making it hard to type, and making an awful clicky noise on my otherwise silent laptop keys. That's when I told myself I would have to trim them. But today I still haven't done so. And I am still scared. Well, scared isn't really the right word... Reluctant, that's probably better. I better get over this and move on.
( Stuff about my yarn shipment... )

No point, I was just thinking of this
Aug. 15th, 2005 04:49 pmI don't know what reminded me of this, but I want to write it down so I don't forget. There is a house half a block away and across the street from our new house (well, the one we'll be renting and MAYBE buying in the future), and this other place recently got sold for - I kid you not - $449,000!!!!!1111oneoneone omgwtfbbq!!!!
It's nothing special! It's just a 1-story rambler with a double garage! Ack! I mean, it looks like it's a pretty nice place, and it's got a nice yard and stuff... But W-O-W.
frino just told me that the nicer houses in the little town where she lives right now are $80-$100K!!! Someone smack this town!! What is the DEAL with these prices?!!! I bet I could go just 20 miles away and pay half that for the same home. Then again, I wouldn't be as close to the Cities, and I guess that's something you pay more for.
Eek.

General updates (mostly Burning Man)
Aug. 14th, 2005 10:18 pmHoly smokes - Burning Man is 2 weeks away!! Ack! This whole past year I have been having dreams and worries about not being ready with all necessary plans and supplies when we finally get there, and now it's kind of looking like that might (partially) be the case! ( Read more... )
Damn my sleuthing skills :(
Aug. 14th, 2005 01:09 pmSad Sad Sad.... Turns out that the Walken for President thing IS INDEED a hoax... created by some people on the "General Mayhem" forums... I believe they first mention this particular hoax on about the 4th page of the discussion I just linked.
WHY, GOD?? WHY?????????
WHY, GOD?? WHY?????????
Get America Back On Track!
Aug. 14th, 2005 12:41 pm
This could be SO AWESOME for AMERICA! (Yeah, right. The awesome ones never win.) But let's try anyway!
And YES, I realize that this very well may be a hoax... but I can still hope, can't I? And if it is indeed fake, it's a nice-looking hoax anyway...
EDIT: Goddammit, it is a hoax. See here for details.
Fire drill
Aug. 11th, 2005 02:39 pmLast night I was woken up at about 3:00 am. The fire alarms in my apartment building were going off, and so was my smoke detector. This happened several weeks ago at about 11:00 pm, just as I was going to bed. Last time, I crabbily wandered out into the parking lot in my pajamas with all the other tenants, waited for the fire department to show up, and then went back in when they told us it was just a faulty detector that caused that alarms to go off.
This time, I was DEAD asleep, and not at all pleased. I live on the ground floor, and my patio door opens right onto the grass, and then I can take a few steps into the lot. I scowled to myself, still half-asleep, and decided to stay in my bed. If there was a real fire, I'd get up and throw on a robe and go out my patio door. But until I smelled smoke or heard people outside yelling about flames, I was going to stay put. Plus, I was sleeping naked and did not particularly feel like putting anything on if I didn't have to.
So I stayed in bed scowling at the noise. I saw the lights of the fire engine flashing through my blinds when it arrived. I heard firemen go stomping up the stairs. I continued to scowl.
Then the alarms stopped honking, and my smoke detector stopped squealing outside my bedroom door. I didn't hear any sounds of panic. I didn't smell smoke. I stayed in my warm bed, waiting for a signal. A few minutes later, through my bedroom window, I heard a fireman go back outside and tell the suckers out in the parking lot that they could go back inside. That was all I needed to hear. It was now after 4:00 am, and I fell back asleep immediately.
This is ridiculous. I swear it has only been about 6 weeks since the last time this happened... Yeah, that's right... last time it happened the night before I started my new position here at work, and that was June 16th. I am SO glad to be moving out of that building soon. Overall, it's been a nice place to live, but now that I know I'm going to be moving into the house on Lydia Avenue, I'm feeling less and less satisfied with my little apartment. It's just like when I got the promotion - in the weeks before I transferred over to the new position, I found myself starting to dislike my old position a lot, even though I had previously liked it. I guess when I know for sure that I won't have to deal with something in the near future, I stop being vigilant about seeing the good in it. Huh. Interesting.

What did I tell you about TRANS FATS??
Aug. 11th, 2005 08:55 amBoy, did I call this one or what!
NYC to Reduce Trans Fats at Restaurants
I see this as just the beginning, the tip of the iceberg. It's a good idea, of course, and I'm glad they are doing it. However, once this concept catches on, it will just become another gimmick - a marketing device to sell stuff that is full of other kinds of crap and inundate us with more "targeted" advertising!!
Goddammit, why do I always have to be right? >:(

Yarn Color Update &c.
Aug. 10th, 2005 08:31 amThis is an update to this entry.
I ultimately decided to go with the color Jade, because although I think I technically have blue eyes, they often look more green (due to the yellow ring around my pupil... was that there before I became a werewolf? I think it was...) depending on what I'm wearing, or the weather, or my mood, or the general lighting... Also, Jon has AMAZINGLY beautiful blue eyes, and next to him, mine ALWAYS look green, never blue.
So I went with Jade, which I think is a pretty shade of green that most closely matches the green of my "blue" eyes.
Thanks to all of you who gaveway too many great suggestions and made it absolutely no easier than if I had just decided myself! heehee ^_~

Craving weird foods again
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:05 amToday I am craving feta-stuffed olives. And capers. Capers in ANYTHING. I almost bought some of the olives last night, but I am really trying to watch my budget carefully right now, with the vacation coming up, and the move after that. And feta-stuffed olives are not exactly a cheap treat. Nor are capers. But ooooh, I would make good food with them... luscious, piquant capers... I love them so.
I've never been much interested in sports. In school, my big sport was spelling bees. I'm not embarassed, because I have some pretty big trophies, and you have to be smart to be a good speller.
The other sport I love, but don't always participate in, is Competitive Eating. In the last few years, I have become a rather avid fan of the sport, especially of Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas. This lady makes me feel justified in my own gluttony! My friends like to laugh at how a person of my small stature can eat so much - we joke that I have one hollow leg where all the food actually goes, since my stomach couldn't possibly hold the amounts that I eat.
The Black Widow just won another eating competition this weekend. In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, she smoked the competition by eating 35 bratwursts in 10 minutes. The previous record was just 19.5 brats in the same amount of time. She is a 99-pound tiny little GODDESS! Here's the Washington Post story on that feat.
It takes real skill to eat like that. And Sonya Thomas and my abosolute all-time eating hero, Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi (who was the reason I first really got interested in the sport back in 2001) both also show that the the skinny little people are the BEST eaters! So maybe I should start training in earnest...
One of my favorite memories from the 2001 Nathan's Famous Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest (I was watching it on TV) was when Kobayashi started eating more hot dogs than they had signs for! There were women holding up cars that represented how many hot dogs each competitor had eaten, and up until that year, the record was something like 25 or so. Well, he just kept eating well past 25, and 30, and 40 and more! And I remember they had to scramble to get a marker and paper and start WRITING DOWN the number he was on! No one was prepared for such skills! I was captivated! I had heard of "Japanesing" (eating the hot dog and bun seperately - pioneered by Kazutoyo "The Rabbit" Arai at least a couple years before) and was amused by it, but I didn't really get INTERESTED until Kobayashi hit the scene.
These contests go on all year, all around the world. It's pretty interesting. Here's the official site for the International Federation of Competitive Eating, if you're interested to learn more about it.
