The stupid it burns.
There is SOOO much I want to say to this little lady Tonya Jameson, but considering the article is like 2 years old (and really badly written), and the fact that this is a re-post of the original article from the Charlotte Observer, there's not a huge reason to comment at the webpage. But that doesn't mean I can't say something here! ( Read more... )

I'm such a nerd
Jan. 10th, 2006 04:17 pmI have this knitting binder that I just put together in the last week or so. It's nice, because now I can keep track of all my WIPs and patterns and notes and stuff. I even made that nice little template that I use to keep track of my WIP notes and details. It's all come in VERY handy already.
So anyway, I have 5 extra-wide tabbed dividers that I want to use to keep the binder more organized as its contents grow. I don't know what to label the tabs!!! I mean, I have some rough ideas, I know I want one section for WIPs, and one for FO notes, and definitely one for Patterns, but what do I do with the other two? Miscellaneous info? Something else? Should I just leave them blank and figure it out later? (Ugh, I really don't like doing stuff like that. I'm so anal. ;)
Also, I have listed 16 categories that I generally sort patterns into. This is PERFECT - it means that I can buy 2 packs of the 8-tab dividers and then sub-divide the Patterns section! However, since the binder is just getting started, I might just hold off on this for now and keep things generally alphabetized until it gets out of hand. ( These are the categories I'm thinking of using )
I really love this stuff. I am CRAZY about those clear plastic sheet protectors - I can use them for patterns printed off the computer, photocopies from books, and patterns torn out of my magazines! Plus, once I'm done with a project, I can stick the notes into one of them so it doesn't get ripped or lost.

Sprinter strikes again
Jan. 10th, 2006 12:50 pmAnd by "Sprinter" I mean the season that we seem to be trapped in right now. The forecast high for today is about 40 degrees*. The forecast for tomorrow calls for temperatures possibly up to 45 degrees! What is going on here?!? Seriously, we haven't really had much decent snow at all this whole season. Not that I want it, but I feel bad for Jon, who loves to snowboard. He is seriously considering taking a week to go to some mountainous state like Montana or Colorado, just to play in the snow.
*that's about 4.4 Celsius - bear in mind that water freezes at 32F, so 40 is ridiculously balmy and warm for January**

Skull Scarf Started!
Jan. 9th, 2006 11:45 amI'm so excited! I started the Skull Illusion Scarf for
imogen_blue last night and got about 34 rows into it - estimating, since it's not with me right now, but I'd say it's maybe 4-5" long right now. It's soft pink and white, just like she asked, and it's looking a LOT better than the last 2 or 3 times I tried doing this pattern! I can already make out the crossbones when I hold it at an angle!
My plan - Finish this scarf and send it ASAP - preferably before winter starts in Oz. I think that's more than reasonable. ;)
ETA: Oh, and I also got my Kacha-Kacha row counter last night! Woo-hoo!

I made a printable knitting log template!
Jan. 8th, 2006 07:09 pmI print these out and 3-hole punch them to keep in my "knitting binder", where I also keep lots of patterns I like in those nice clear plastic sheet protectors. It's come in really handy for keeping track of notes I have for each WIP I've got going on.

Fun! Poi Classes
Jan. 5th, 2006 08:36 pmI signed up for the poi class with Minneapolis Community Education! I think it will be fun and I hope to get the hang of some moves that I've been having difficulty with on my own. Anyone wanna join me? Just $44 for 8 weeks of classes, starting at the end of this month. Act fast!
Yippee! Colors!
Jan. 5th, 2006 06:49 pmI must be psychic, or else I have a really good natural sense of airmail shipping time.
MY COLOR-CHANGING POI ARRIVED TODAY! Hooray! As mentioned in an earlier entry, I had them shipped to Jon's work, and when I got home today there was the backage on the shelf next to the key-hanger by the back door! I had to bounce a few times. Then I ran downstairs to say hi to Jon and open the package and try them out. OMGwtf they are so pretty!! LOL kthxbye!!!11oneone Wow, I'm starting to annoy myself!
Seriously, though, they are gorgeous. They go through EVERY color of the rainbow and the color change is very smooth and subtle. It would be irresistible to just sit and stare at them forEVAR if I was stoned. I gave them a few spins and Indy attempted to bop them a few times, so I took them outside to see them in the dark - BEATUTIFUL. I am very very pleased. ^_^
And speaking of poi, I found out thru the TC Burners mailing list (and then again from a kind friend who forwarded me the message just in case ^_^) that there is going to be an 8-week poi spinning class starting at the end of this month. While I've been doing pretty well figuring out quite a bit on my own, I think it would be really fun to sign up and get some hands-on help with my 5-beat weave. It's $55, but I think that's a pretty good price for 8 weeks! I'll have to look a little more into it.

Neato thing, this LJBook
Jan. 5th, 2006 02:43 pmI don't know why I didn't see this before. LJBook lets you turn your entire LJ (including comments and pictures!!) into a very nice pdf file. I don't think I would ever need to do this, but it's nice to know the option is there. I tried it. I've been doing this LJ thing since May 7, 2004, and my LJBook was almost 350 pages long. I'm sure it will get much longer.
One of the things I liked best about this was the fact that you could browse in Adobe by year and month, and the file itself also had a Table of Contents with clickable links for every single entry title, so you could just jump to the page where the entry was.
If I ever move my blog from here, I might have to use this service. Good thing to know.

Desiderata
Jan. 4th, 2006 03:12 pmI just had a chat with a friend who is going through some tough times. Or rather, he is just starting to emerge from them, but that doesn't make it any less tough. Things got so bad that he now has only one direction to go - UP. And that in itself is somewhat encouraging for him.
For some reason, while we were chatting, I remembered how my mom likes to say "The universe is unfolding as it should." It's a line from a poem called Desiderata, published in 1927 and then recorded with music in 1971, kind of like the Baz Luhrman recording of "Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)". (You should click that link. It will explain where that text actually came from. I kind of get annoyed when people just think Baz wrote it. It wasn't even a speech to a graduating class. It was a newspaper column, people. It was written to graduates, but it was not a speech.) /pedantic rant
OK, so here's the text of Desiderata. I like it. Enjoy.

Silly winter
Jan. 3rd, 2006 03:37 pmThis has been a silly winter. We get huge amounts of snow dumped on us, and then it melts into slush right away, and then it dumps on us again! This morning when we were waking up to the radio, we heard that today's high was supposed to be near 40, and then we should get several inches of snow tonight. What??
Jon said this whole winter has been like a cross between winter and spring. He suggests we refer to it as "sprinter". ^_^

OMG KNITTING LOL!!!!11oneone
Jan. 3rd, 2006 01:44 pmHoly bouncy excitement!!! I went home for lunch and saw that the front door was propped open by a package stuck in it! MY XMAS PRESENT FROM
frino!!!!!11111oneone ^_^ It's a pattern-a-day calendar!! I'm so tweaked up with excitement!! Eeeeek!!!!!
I was kind of glad I got it a couple days into the new year - it gave me an excuse to look at more than one pattern - hehehe ;). So I got to see the one for this weekend, yesterday, and today. And then I HAD TO STOP. :( Bummer. This is going to be hard. I did look at the index - looks like there's lots of fun stuff in there! Bags, sweaters, socks up the wazoo (woo-hoo!), and some new stitch patterns plus tons of other cool stuff! OK, I did cheat a little and page through to get a peek at the pictures for the next couple days... and I peeked at my birthday and
frino's birthday and my wedding date (yeah, I guess we are doing 9/30/06 after all.). This is so freaking exciting! I think it's about 300 total patterns, since each weekend is one pattern and I saw at least one afghan that has 4 parts to the pattern. SO COOL!

Possible new furniture
Jan. 3rd, 2006 09:51 amWell, we had a great extended weekend. :) It's funny - ever since Jon said that I get to make the final decision on new furniture, he's been a lot more interested in shopping for it with me! I think he's worried that I'll pick something out that he hates, and he knows I like his input. This is perfect!
This weekend, we found a coffee table that we will definitely be getting no matter what, and looked at a couch/loveseat combo with some potential, and a beautiful sectional that we liked too.
( The Breakdown: )
